Match Preview: Italy Under-21s vs England Under-21s

England’s Young Lions meet Italy and Germany in friendlies ahead of the 2023 European Under-21 Championship finals in Romania and Georgia. Lee Carsley’s team topped Group G, finishing four points ahead of second-place Czech Republic in June.

They won eight of 10 games and allowed just seven goals. This month, the Under-21s go to Abruzzo, Italy, before hosting Germany’s youth at Bramall Lane next Tuesday.

Young Lions’ recent run has been fearsome, especially in front of goal, despite losing their last qualifier 2-1 at home to Slovenia. With 26 goals in their previous 10 games, England believes they have the firepower to win the Euros, but they must first face the best.

Last year’s visitors were ousted in the group stage, but Italy reached the quarterfinals before losing to Portugal. The Azzurrini have already booked a return to the finals, finishing five points clear of Group F runners-up the Republic of Ireland, whom they beat 4-1 on a penultimate day.

Paolo Nicolato’s team won seven of 10 matches and won’t lose in Tbilisi next July. First up is England at Stadio Adriatico-Giovanni Cornacchia, followed by Japan the following week. Nicolato may call on Tottenham-bound Destiny Udogie, Juventus’ Fabio Miretti, and Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini (who scored against Roma on Sunday).

Team News: Italy Under-21s vs England Under-21s

Lee Carsley announced a 25-man team for the September get-together and welcomes back former senior cap Conor Gallagher. Emile Smith Rowe, another previous candidate for the aircraft to Qatar, has played fewer than 90 minutes this season and is sidelined with a groin injury.

Oliver Skipp recently returned from injury to join Tottenham teammates Ryan Sessegnon and Djed Spence in the visitors’ squad. Tyler Morton, on loan at Blackburn Rovers, might join Harvey Elliott in midfield.

Folarin Balogun, Anthony Gordon, and Cole Palmer are Carsley’s options up front. Destiny Udogie, Nicolo Rovella, Fabio Miretti, and Raoul Bellanova have been called up by Italy. Bellanova gets a challenge from Andrea Cambiaso on the right wing in the hosts’ 3-5-2 formation.

Paolo Nicolato omits Torino’s Samuele Ricci from his newest roster and selects six new players. Lazio’s Matteo Cancellieri and Leeds United’s Wilfried Gnonto join the senior team. So Pietro Pellegri should start up front alongside Lorenzo Colombo or Nicolo Cambiaghi – the latter scored in Italy’s 4-1 triumph over Ireland last time out.

  • Italy Under-21 Lineup: Plizzari, Okoli, Scalvini, Viti, Cambiaso, Miretti, Rovella, Bove, Bellanova, Pellegri, Cambiaghi.
  • England Under-21 Lineup: Bursik, Aarons, Colwill, Harwood-Bellis, Thomas, Ramsey, Gallagher, Elliott, Palmer, Balogun, Gordon.

Our Prediction: Italy Under-21s 2-2 England Under-21s

In the last third of the field, neither team is lacking in confidence because they scored a combined 45 goals during the qualifying stage for the European Championship.

In addition, later this month, several players who are currently doing well will be called up to play for either side. As a direct consequence of this, there is a possibility that the two primary challengers for the continental title in 2023 may end up with the same total amount of points.
