Juventus vs Benfica: Prediction, Team News, Lineups

While they are now winless in their last six games, Juventus will host Group H opponents Benfica on Wednesday night. The Bianconeri lost their season opener at PSG and were then held at home in a contentious Serie A match, while their opponents are undefeated and atop the Primeira Liga standings.

Match Preview: Juventus vs Benfica

Juventus hosted Salernitana in Serie A’s sixth round on Sunday after losing their season opener in Paris. Juve was expected to win just their third game since the 2022-23 season, but they almost lost. The VAR deducted three points.

Arkadiusz Milik’s last-minute ‘winner’ was disallowed, and coach Max Allegri was sent off. Its legitimacy is disputed. Juve tied the game in the 102nd minute after trailing by two.

Allegri’s team finished eighth in Serie A before returning to Europe, and they can’t afford to slip up in Group H, where just one spot in the last 16 is up for grabs. Juventus has lost five of six vs Benfica. Porto beat Turin 2-1 on aggregate in the 2014 Europa League semi-finals.

Benfica has lost 10 of 12 European games in Italy, including all three Champions League meetings. Both at home and away, the Eagles have won all 11 games this season. Since May, they’ve won 17 consecutive and preserved 10 clean sheets.

After beating FC Midtjylland and Dynamo Kyiv in Champions League qualification last month, Roger Schmidt’s club beat Maccabi Haifa at home last week. The scorer was Rafa Silva. Their first opening-day win since 2015 followed five straight domestic triumphs, and they beat Famalicao 1-0 on Saturday.

Benfica, European champions in 1961 and 1962 but never since due to Bela Guttmann’s curse, pushed Liverpool to the semifinals last season and should finish second in Group H. Schmidt will want to keep rolling against Juventus, especially early on.

Team News: Juventus vs Benfica

Not only are Paul Pogba and Federico Chiesa still out for the season, but the Bianconeri have also lost Manuel Locatelli, Adrien Rabiot, Angel Di Maria, and Wojciech Szczesny to injuries this season. All four players sat out this past weekend.

In goal, Mattia Perin should continue to fill in for Leandro Paredes, while in center midfield, the youthful Fabio Miretti may continue to start with the newcomer Leandro Paredes.

However, both Juan Cuadrado and Arkadiusz Milik will be allowed to play since their red cards on Sunday only resulted in Serie A bans; it remains to be seen if Max Allegri will pair Milik with Dusan Vlahovic up top or opt for a front three instead.

In the latter option, left winger Filip Kostic would play; he has contributed to five goals in his last five European games, including an assist in his Champions League debut at the Parc des Princes.

In the meanwhile, Benfica will get back forward Goncalo Ramos and midfielder Joao Mario from suspensions they received before their match against Famalicao last weekend.

Both should start for the away team, with debutant Julian Draxler fighting with David Neres to play off of Ramos and Rafa Silva in the attack.

Joao Victor, Lucas Verissimo, and Morato, Roger Schmidt’s starting defensive three, are all injured and will not play. However, Alex Grimaldo, who has been involved in four goals in his past four Champions League games, will start at fullback.

  • Juventus’s Likely Starting Lineup: Perin, Danilo, Bonucci, Bremer, Sandro, Miretti, Paredes, McKennie, Cuadrado, Vlahovic, Kostic.
  • Potential Benfica Starting XI: Vlachodimos, Gilberto, Otamendi, A. Silva, Grimaldo, Fernandez, Luis, Draxler, R. Silva, Mario, Ramos.

Our Prediction: Juventus 1-1 Benfica

It appears that any improvement for Juventus will have to wait until their top players return to the squad, so they will need to do well to grind out a draw even against strong Eagles.

Another lackluster performance by Juventus over the weekend suggests that any improvement will be required to wait until their top talents return to the squad. It is quite doubtful that the home team will be able to take the game to their guests, thus the hosts may have to make do with a draw.
