Bundesliga 2026-27 Season Preview: Bayern's Reign & a New US TV Home

Germany's top flight opens the weekend of August 28-30, 2026 — pushed later than usual by the World Cup — and it does so with a familiar champion and a brand-new US home. Here's the verified lay of the land, and how to watch it in the States.

Bayern chase another title

Bayern Munich enter 2026-27 as champions, having won the 2025-26 Bundesliga with 89 points — their 34th league title — and completed a domestic double by winning the DFB-Pokal, all under Vincent Kompany. Borussia Dortmund (73), RB Leipzig (65) and VfB Stuttgart (62) rounded out the top four.

Schalke are back — and new managers arrive

One of German football's biggest names returns: Schalke 04 won the 2. Bundesliga to earn promotion, alongside SV Elversberg and play-off winners SC Paderborn. Heidenheim, St. Pauli and Wolfsburg went down. In the dugouts, Kompany (Bayern) and Niko Kovač (Dortmund) stay, while RB Leipzig appointed Martín Demichelis and Bayer Leverkusen brought in Carles Martínez.

A new US TV home — and a lot of free soccer

This is the headline for US viewers: the Bundesliga's English-language rights moved to Versant's USA Sports. At least 30 matches a season air on USA Network, and all other matches stream free (ad-supported) on Fandango — an unusually accessible arrangement. Spanish-language coverage runs on Telemundo and Universo (100+ matches), with every match on Peacock. The new partnership debuts on August 22 with the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup — a Dortmund–Bayern "Klassiker" — before the league itself kicks off the following weekend.

Ones to Watch

Our picks below are informed opinion based on the form above — not a crystal ball.

Bayern Munich
Reigning double winners

Opinion: still the benchmark, and with Kompany continuing there's every reason to expect another title challenge from the front.

Schalke 04
Back in the Bundesliga

Opinion: one of Germany's most passionately supported clubs returns to the top flight — their matches, and their famous atmosphere, are a story in themselves.

Borussia Dortmund
Bayern's chief rivals

Opinion: Der Klassiker is the fixture that lights up the German season, and Dortmund meet Bayern first in the August 22 Supercup — an early measure of the gap.
