Barcelona are the team to beat
Barcelona enter 2026-27 as two-time reigning champions. They won the 2025-26 title with 94 points — their second in a row and 29th overall — finishing eight clear of Real Madrid, who took second on 86. Villarreal (72), Atlético Madrid (69) and Real Betis (60) rounded out the top five. Hansi Flick stays in charge as Barça go for a three-peat.
Mourinho returns to Madrid
The story of the summer is at the Bernabéu: after a turbulent season in which Real Madrid dismissed Xabi Alonso in January and ran with interim boss Álvaro Arbeloa, the club appointed José Mourinho in June 2026 — a return to Real Madrid more than a decade after his first spell (2010-13). Mourinho against a back-to-back-champion Barcelona is the season's obvious headline.
Who's up, who's down
Promoted from the Segunda División are Racing Santander (ending a 14-year top-flight absence), Deportivo La Coruña and Málaga (via the play-off). Going the other way, Mallorca, Girona and Real Oviedo were relegated.
The El Clásico dates
Mark the calendar: the first El Clásico of the season is set for October 25, 2026 at Camp Nou, with the return on May 9, 2027 at the Santiago Bernabéu.
