MLS 2026: The Supporters' Shield Race, the Playoff Picture & How to Watch
With the All-Star break behind it, MLS heads into the back half of 2026 with a genuine Supporters' Shield race and one of the tightest Western Conferences in memory. Here's where things stand (as of late July 2026), how the playoffs work, and how to watch it all in the US.
The Supporters' Shield race
At the top of the overall table, Nashville SC lead with 39 points from 17 games, two clear of Inter Miami (37, also from 17). Behind them, a three-way Western logjam — Vancouver, LAFC and San Jose — sits level on 33. Nashville and Vancouver share the league's best goal difference (+21), so the Shield is shaping up as a two-team race up top with a bunched chasing pack.
Conference by conference
In the East, Nashville (39) and Inter Miami (37) are clear of New England (29) and Chicago (26). The West is the story: Vancouver, LAFC and San Jose are all on 33 with different games played, so the table can reshuffle week to week, with Real Salt Lake (26) leading the next group.
Storylines: Messi, Musa and a record-late MLS Cup
Inter Miami are defending the first MLS Cup in club history, won in 2025, now playing at their new home, Miami Freedom Park; Lionel Messi became the fastest player in MLS history to reach 100 goal contributions in 2026. Up front, Petar Musa of FC Dallas leads the Golden Boot race with 13 goals. And there's a scheduling milestone: the 2026 MLS Cup is set for December 18 — the latest ever, and the last December final before MLS shifts to a fall-to-spring calendar from 2027.
How the playoffs work
The top seven clubs in each conference qualify automatically for Round One, while seeds eight and nine play a single-elimination Wild Card match. Round One is a best-of-three series (the higher seed hosts Games 1 and 3); the Conference Semifinals, Conference Finals and MLS Cup are single-elimination, each hosted by the higher seed. The regular season ends on Decision Day, November 7, and the postseason runs to the December 18 MLS Cup.
