Match Preview: Trabzonspor vs Red Star Belgrade

Trabzonspor qualified for the Champions League knockout stage after winning the Turkish Super Lig with 81 points last season. In the Turkish Super Cup, they defeated Sivasspor 4-0.

After a great start to their title defense, Abdullah Avci’s squad lost the opening leg against Copenhagen, 2-1. Anastasios Bakasetas’ stoppage-time goal gave them a 2-1 lead in the home encounter.

Karadeniz Firtinasi headed into their home leg against Antalyaspor pushing for a position in Europe’s premier event, but they were ousted in extra time and will begin their Europa League campaign against Ferencvaros.

The hosts led 1-0 before falling down to 10 men in the 16th minute, but they quickly extended their advantage. Umut Bozok trimmed the deficit to 3-2 with 20 minutes remaining, but Trabzonspor couldn’t equalize and lost.

Avci’s team will try to secure their first group stage win on Thursday after losing 1-0 to Adana Demirspor and sliding to ninth in the Super Lig.

Red Star Belgrade is also off to a poor start after failing to qualify for the Champions League despite winning the Serbian SuperLiga and Serbian Cup.

The Red-Whites entered in the third round and advanced with a 7-0 hammering of Pyunik on aggregate, before playing Maccabi Haifa in the final round and losing 3-2 away after leading 2-1 via Aleksandar Pesic and Guelor Kanga.

Pesic and Mirko Ivanic scored in the home leg, and they lead 2-1 heading into injury time. However, Milan Pavkov scored an own goal in the 90th minute, sending Serbia to the Europa League group stage.

Breel Embolo scored a penalty in the 75th minute to win a penalty shootout against Monaco.

Milos Milojevic’s team won 2-1 against Novi Pazar to maintain a point ahead at the top of the domestic first division after nine games. On Thursday, they will look for their first Europa League victory.

Team News: Trabzonspor vs Red Star Belgrade

Maxi Gomez, who joined Trabzonspor during the summer and scored in the team’s opening group game away at Ferencvaros, will start up top once again after Andreas Cornelius left for Copenhagen at the end of August.

Trezeguet and Enis Bardhi are also expected to play, while experienced midfielder Marek Hamsik of Anastasios Bakasetas will be fighting for playing time.

Another offensive danger is Umut Bozok, who has scored twice in three games since arriving from Lorient. Jean-Philippe Gbamin is expected to play in the holding midfield role, while Marc Bartra, formerly of Barcelona, will partner Vitor Hugo in the center of the back four.

After Milan Pavkov‘s departure for Al-Fayha at the end of August, Aleksandar Pesic, who has scored four goals in 10 outings since signing from Midtjylland, could once again lead Red Star Belgrade’s line.

Osman Bukari, who has scored seven goals since arriving from Gent, will play in the center of the attack with the dangerous winger Aleksandar Katai. Bukari has recorded three goals and two assists in four Champions League qualification games.

At the opposite end of the field, the back three of Nemanja Milunovic, Strahinja Erakovic, and Aleksandar Dragovic should start once again, with Guelor Kanga and Sekou Sanogo playing the role of the engine.

  1. Possible Opening Day Starters For Trabzonspor Include: Cakir; Larsen, Bartra, Hugo, Elmali, Gbamin, Trezeguet, Bakasetas, Bozok, Bardhi, and Gomez.
  2. Possible First-Day Starters for Red Star Belgrade: Borjan, Erakovic, Milunovic, Dragovic, Srnic, Kanga, Sanogo, Rodic, Bukari, Pesic, Katai.

Our Prediction: Trabzonspor 1-1 Red Star Belgrade

We believe that these two teams compete on a playing field that is pretty even, and because Trabzonspor has not yet reached the levels of play that they demonstrated during the previous campaign, we believe that the Serbian side has enough to walk away with a point for a share of the spoils.
